Mel Powers first married Mary Culberson, but they had no children. They separated and Mary was said to have died in an accident with a boyfriend, but cannot substantiate this fact.

Louise Bell Powers died on 14 May 14, 1928 in West Virginia of scarlet fever, nine days after her sister, Charlottie, died of the same illness.
